1. To aid sick, injured, and orphaned wild birds.
Our goal is to aid in the increase of the wild bird population of all the different species by providing care for those that are sick, injured, or orphaned.
2. To help raise awareness toward environmental and ecological issues.
Our bird population has been diminishing over the years from loss of habitat due to progressive development. The ever-increasing encroachment of humans into the natural environment in our region has created havoc, which results in injury, starvation, and unnatural migration for birds, which rely on the resources of our coastal region.
Birds, through their consumption of insects, provide us with one of the greatest defenses against increasing insect population. Insects transmit numerous bacteria and viruses to humans that could become of epidemic nature if not controlled by birds.
3. To educate the public and support our area bird watchers.
Our region of South Jersey is one of the most popular birding hot spots in America. The NJ Audubon Society has a 100-year history in the state and sponsors events that attract bird watchers from around the world. St. Francis Avian wants to help support New Jersey’s tourism industry with plans for an educational facility which will house non-releasable birds. It will also serve as a facility for our children to see wild birds up close. It will provide them with the opportunity to learn about their importance and the significance of our center in helping them and our environment. Everyone will enjoy the exploration on the centers nature trails.
